“The guild have given you a quest: Recover the legendary sword buried deep in a dungeon ! This artifact is guarded by monsters and a boss, so teamwork is crucial to winning battles, but there’s a catch… The sword can only be carried by someone who possesses glory, and that glory is achieved by landing the final blow ! Sharpen the monster’s weapon, heal them to buy time, to ultimately steal the kill !!”

Prototype selected by the jury to be tested at the 14ᵉ festival du jeu de Montpellier “Sortons jouer!”

About the game

The world is in grave danger, and only the legendary sword and its bearer can save it ! A guild hires you and your teammates to search a gloomy dungeon containing the sword, guarded by monsters and a horrible BOSS ! Teamwork is essential to your survival, but there’s a catch… The sword can only be equipped by someone worthy of it !

To do this, you’ll have to finish off the monsters to earn glory tokens ! Whoever completes the last monster of the battle gets one glory token, and whoever completes a boss gets two! But be careful… If the monsters or the boss knock out the whole team, the game wins, and everyone loses the game !

Treating your opponent to save time, sharpening your weapon or the enemy’s, planting a bomb near a teammate, resurrecting the BOSS… anything goes to get the final blow and the glory ! Grab your weapons !

Context

I started this project via an exercise during my 1ʳᵉ school year at Objectif 3D.

We had one month to design a board game whose centerpiece are cards. Of course, one month wasn’t enough to give the result I have now, but it did enable me to make a pencil-drawn paper prototype of it to carry out the playtests.

Starting with my video game / board game culture, I began by focusing on the things I like most about these games, whether it’s the universe the game presents, or the gameplay mechanics. After numerous playtests at school and with my friends and family, the game rules were changed to create a better balanced version, while keeping the original idea !

Graphic design

To bring this project to fruition, I created all the illustrations for the game elements and the rule book.
I’m not good when it comes to drawing, I had to look for a graphic style I could do, while maintaining the game’s humorous side.

My main graphic inspiration comes from the Youtube channel “CarbotAnimations”, a visual style intended for 2D animation on parodies of Blizzard games.

With the help of a graphics tablet, all the illustrations were done in Photoshop. Almost every drawing has a nod to a game or reference !

Future of this project

As I’ve conceived it, the game’s format is fairly modular, meaning that it can be expanded with new cards or game modes. That’s why part of me is still hesitating about what I can do with this project.
There’s a printed version and a virtual version available on Tabletop Simulator on the Steam workshop. Today, I’d at least like to have it printed in a boxed version, to count another completed project in my personal portfolio, and then in the more or less distant future, I’d like to have it published! 🙂
